Alienated, cut off from God
This is largely the present human condition: alienated, separated from God and suppressing all knowledge of God; confused about life, it’s direction, purpose and meaning; spiritually dead, living for materialism and pleasures.
The present and permanent solution: Jesus Christ comes to deal with this 3-fold problem: bringing individuals back to God; giving direction and meaning; awakening individuals to spiritual life which is full, rich and unending (eternal). Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
The Gift of Peace
The Lord Jesus doesn’t address the uneasy relationship between nations but
peace for individuals. There are two kinds of personal peace. Each type entails a gift and a responsibility; what God has done and what we must do in order to know that peace. There is a peace between God and his reconciled child brought about by the death of Jesus and accessed by repentance and faith. There is also personal peace in our heart which is the Gift of the Holy Spirit and is accessed by personal trust and prayer.
The Heart of Preaching
In our present spiritual climate there is the great danger of a preacher becoming discouraged and disheartened. The remedy is to constantly remember the mercy of God experienced by the preacher and the power of God evidenced in the Bible and history – ‘…the most urgent need in the Christian Church today is true preaching…’’ (Martyn Lloyd-Jones). This ‘true preaching’ is a special kind of preaching. It is the proclamation of God’s Word from the heart of the preacher to the heart of the hearer.
